I made a quick salad with fresh greens, farro and quinoa, shredded chicken, and pickled red onions for dinner tonight. With a bit of guacamole on top, it was flavorful and delicious. What’s for dinner at your house? #dinner #whatsfordinner #cooking #salad

I love all things pickled. For my taste buds, there are very few dishes that can’t benefit from a healthy dose of acidity. So, if we have a jar of pickled something in the refrigerator, you’ll likely find me adding it to the top of my burger or sandwich before heading to our farmhouse table. These Quick Pickled Red Onions are a delicious way to add that briny, bright note to almost any meal. They are beautiful and delicious on top of burgers and sandwiches. They're great on tacos or fajitas....

I have been checking this fig tree for growth since the last of the snow melted away. I was so happy to finally discover green leaves. This is a Chicago Hardy Fig that we planted in two years ago. Each spring, it really makes me wait with bated breath to see if it has made it through our snowy winter. It sets forth leaves so much later than any other tree or bush in our gardens. Seeing these green leaves was worth the wait. I’m glad that this fig has made it through another New England wi...

It’s a messy job, but long overdue. I have a podcast to listen to and four knives to sharpen tonight. Then I’ll call it good and get back to it again tomorrow night on the next batch. It’s messy work, but it sure is satisfying to take a dull edge and transform it into something that can slice easily and cleanly. How do you maintain the knives in your kitchen? Do you sharpen them yourself or have them professionally sharpened? #kitchen #knife #knives #whetstone #whetstonesharpening #diy #...

We made nachos for dinner tonight. We set out all the toppings and everyone made their own creation. It was simple and allowed us to make something quick while milling about in the kitchen together. That’s one of my favorite sort of meals. What’s for dinner at your house? #dinner #whatsfordinner #cooking #familydinner #nachos

Did you know that some hydrangeas produce flowers on last year’s stems? If you prune them away, you’ll sacrifice the blooms and have a lush, green plant without any flowers. Follow along and I’ll show you how we tend to the hydrangeas in our gardens and how to plant a new hydrangea that you can enjoy for years to come. You’ll find more gardening tips on our YouTube channel at 1840FarmNH #gardening #gardening #flowers #hydrangea #hydrangeas #gardentips

It’s a rainy morning in our garden, so I grabbed my camera and headed outside. I love to capture raindrops clinging to flower petals. Somehow, it seems like I am witness to something magical. Those droplets of water seem suspended in time. They hold a universe of possibilities within them, ready to nourish the ground below. And then, in an instant, they are gone. I am never sorry to have captured raindrops in the garden. I certainly wasn’t this morning. I was grateful to have seen them an...

It’s stepped outside this morning and discovered that the first iris bloom had opened. It’s a beauty and one of my favorite varieties. I have always loved this classic purple and white combination. This bloom signals the start of iris season in our gardens. Over the next few weeks, we will be treated to a rainbow of blooms. I’ll be sure to share all of them with you, so I hope that you’re ready for iris season here on the farm! What’s blooming in your garden? #gardening #Garden #garden #n...

Tonight’s dinner answered the question: if grilled cheese and a salad are a good combination, wouldn’t grilled cheese herbed sourdough croutons on top of a salad be even better? The answer is a resounding yes. Wow, was it delicious. What’s for dinner at your house? #dinner #whatsfordinner #cooking #salad #grilledcheese #sourdough #cheese #croutons

There are few sights I love to discover more than the first peony buds. I love peonies and look forward to them each year. Finding these buds means that we’re marching our way towards peony season. Hooray! How are your peonies doing this year? #gardening #Garden #garden #naturephotography #gardener #nature #flowers #peonies #peony

This Flourless Chocolate Cake with a Brown Sugar Meringue Topping is one of my favorite desserts. It also happens to be naturally gluten free. I love the crisp exterior of the meringue with just enough of brown sugar flavor to come through and taste like a brown sugar marshmallow. Then there's the fudgy chocolate cake layer that is so flavorful. This dessert is as beautiful as it is delicious. It looks like something I'd marvel at a local bakery. Don't let the beauty fool you into thinking t...

We have four days of rainy weather ahead of us, so u am making the most of this sunny day by working on a few projects in the yard and gardens. The first was getting our solar fountains running for the season. Pollinators and small birds stop by these fountains and the wet rocks beneath the basin to get a drink. I love to watch them flit about from fountain to fountain. We’ve had these fountains running for years and they are still going strong running on pure sunshine. Look closely and y...

I was lucky enough to catch the magnolia tree at our town library when it was in full bloom yesterday. I got out of the car and gave myself a moment to just stand there and appreciate how beautiful it looks. This grand old building that houses our library is being remodeled this year. For the first time since I moved to this town, I can’t walk right up those granite steps to go inside and browse the selection of books. It only makes me appreciate our library even more. I can’t wait until it...

We treated ourselves to takeout from one of our favorite local spots tonight. Agedashi tofu, pan fried vegetable dumplings and pork dumplings, xiao long bao (pork buns), and pai huang gua (spicy cucumbers) made for a spicy and flavorful dinner. It was so delicious. The company was equally great, and we were able to support a local spot we feel lucky to have so close to home. We don’t eat out very often, but I enjoyed every last bite tonight. Sourdough garlic bread, local steak with mushrooms, and fiddleheads sautéed in butter were on the dinner menu at the farmhouse tonight. The garden provided fresh chives to dress the steak and mushrooms. The food was delicious, but it was the company I had today that I enjoyed the most. I was fortunate to spend time with my parents, my kids, and friends that are so dear that I consider them family. What a gift it was to spend time with them. It’s one that I am so grateful for. #family #fam...
